Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation are holding some “TeamChallenge” events this year. The GDGO was asked to help run the Disc Golf event and found out a bit more about these fundraisers.
The Team Challenges are run by Gwinnett County as charity events to raise money for children and elderly who would like to take advantage of Gwinnett County programs but cannot afford the fees. Disc Golf is only one of the events they’ve planned this summer.
The Disc Golf Team Challenge will be Saturday, June 26. It will be a one round charity event with a start time of 9 am. All teams registered must have 4 people, which needs to include at least one woman, and pay a $50 registration fee (which is tax deductible).
The GDGO is donating 2 CTP discs and minis for all.
There will be trophies for the winners (provided by the county;) there will not be a payout in plastic or cash.

The following press release was sent out by GCPR this week.
Disc Golf Volunteers at Work

(LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga., – April 19, 2010) Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation recognizes the volunteer efforts of Gwinnett Disc Golf Organization (GDGO) during National Volunteer week.
GDGO partners with Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation to expand disc golf recreation opportunities in Gwinnett County. GDGO members have freely given numerous hours to expand the sport of Disc Golf in the county park system. Members raised funds to donate 19 replacement disc golf baskets at Lenora Park, 36 sets of replacement chains for disc golf baskets, practice basket, benches, brooms and more.
Volunteers have become a valuable asset to Gwinnet County’s park system, dedicating over 5,000 hours of their time in the past five years to improve course layout and provide disc golf lessons to novice players.
In addition to introducing new players to the game, these volunteers go above and beyond to assist staff in hosting Disc Golf tournaments to support a scholarship fund, built an informational kiosk and stay abreast of new developments in disc golf in order to keep Gwinnett’s disc golf community ahead of the trends.
The volunteers also assist with course maintenance by moving pin placements bi-weekly, installing distance markers for practice baskets, completing weekly safety checks, replacing brooms and other equipment, installing benches, broom holders and tee boxes. Read the rest of this entry »

Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation (GCPR) reminds us that no ice in GA is really safe to walk on. The ice on the ponds at Lenora and Alexander parks is a couple of inches thick at most. Ice is not considered safe to walk on until it is over 1 foot thick.
Please exercise caution when retrieving discs from the surface of the ponds.
